Tattoo Supply Stores: How to Find One, Vet It, and Buy From It
A practical guide to finding and checking tattoo supply sellers, using this directory's store types, city pages, and call-ahead checklist.

This directory is maintained by Tattoo Studio Pro, which makes studio software. No supplier paid to appear in this guide.
Looking for a tattoo supply store usually means you need needles, cartridges, ink, barrier film, or a machine, and you want a real counter or a reliable shipper. Map pins are noisy. Some places are studios that do not sell retail. Some have closed. Some only keep a small shelf.
This guide explains the three seller types on this directory, how we check listings, how to use state and city pages, and what to ask before you drive or place an order. For the local-versus-online tradeoffs in more depth, see Tattoo Studio Pro’s where to buy tattoo supplies guide. For license paperwork and pro accounts, see our guide on whether you need a license to buy tattoo supplies.
What counts as a tattoo supply store here
This directory lists three kinds of walk-in sellers. Labels match the About page:
| Type | What it usually means | What it often carries |
|---|---|---|
| Tattoo supply store | A dedicated supply counter or shop whose main business is selling supplies | Full or near-full lines: needles and cartridges, ink, machines, PPE, aftercare, furniture and tools |
| Tattoo shop that sells supplies | A working studio with a retail shelf or counter for artists | Common consumables (needles, some ink, aftercare). Deeper stock varies by shop |
| Smoke shop with tattoo supplies | A smoke shop that also stocks tattoo gear | Limited selection. Brands and sterile packaging quality vary. Check seals and dates carefully |
As of 2026-10-29 this directory has 291 walk-in listings: 208 tattoo supply stores, 59 tattoo shops that sell supplies, and 24 smoke shops with tattoo supplies. Online-only distributors that ship nationwide sit on a separate online tattoo suppliers list (21 as of the same date), not on city pages.
Those counts change as we add and remove sellers. Prefer the live city or state page over any number in this article.
Smoke shops can fill a same-day gap, but treat them like any other seller: sealed sterile goods, brands you recognize, and expiry dates you can read. If you cannot confirm those, buy elsewhere. A later guide will go deeper on which store types sell what; until then, use the type label on each listing and call ahead.
How to find one near you
- Start at a state hub when you are browsing a region. Sellers across Texas, sellers across California, and sellers across Florida together hold a large share of US listings on this site.
- Open a city page when you know where you will drive or ship from. Tier A pages with the most depth nearby include Los Angeles area sellers, tattoo supply stores in Miami, tattoo supply stores in Houston, and Dallas area sellers.
- Read the type stamp on each card (supply store, shop + supply, or smoke shop) before you call.
- Use the filter on state and city pages when you want to hide smoke shops or show supply stores only.
- Check hours, phone, and the verified month on the listing. Stores move and change hours. Call if the drive is long.
- Use the nationwide list when there is no useful counter nearby, or when you are placing a larger restock: online tattoo suppliers.
Houston’s city page is a good example of why the type label matters: several of its listings are smoke shops with supplies. Filter to supply stores only if that is what you want, or call the smoke shop first if you only need a few consumables today.
How to vet a store before you buy
What “verified” means on this directory. We start with business data from Google Maps, then check listings by hand. Each listing shows the month its details were last checked. That check confirms the place appears to sell tattoo supplies at that address. It is not a product quality rating, not a health inspection, and not the same as a supplier’s professional account approval. The About page is the short version of that process.
Call-ahead checklist (useful for any seller type):
- Are you open to the public for supply sales today, or pro accounts only?
- Do you have [specific item] in stock (brand, size, or configuration if you know it)?
- Same-day pickup, or special order only?
- Which documents do you need for a first purchase, if any?
- Can an apprentice buy if the mentor calls or comes in?
- Parking, buzzer, or appointment-only counter?
At the counter or when the box arrives:
- Needles and cartridges: sterile, sealed, within the printed expiry date.
- Ink: lot number and expiry on the bottle; note both before you open it.
- Packaging: no torn seals, crushed boxes, or water damage.
- Return policy: know it before a large order.
We do not rank brands. Ask the counter what other local shops buy, and cross-check with your mentor or shop owner.
How pro accounts fit in
Finding a store and opening a professional online account are related but different steps.
Many online suppliers sell only to people who can prove they own, manage, or work at a licensed shop. Kingpin’s public policy, for example, requires shop-linked documents and says Florida and California shops must provide health department certification. Alliance says verification can take up to 48 hours, and that unverified orders may be declined with a $50 restocking fee. Details differ by supplier.
For the dated comparison of six major suppliers (documents accepted, apprentices, Florida and California rules), use Do you need a license to buy tattoo supplies?. Brick-and-mortar counters often do not publish a policy page, so ask when you call.
Opening a pro account is between you and that supplier. A listing marked verified here does not mean that supplier has approved you.
Local counter vs online order
Local wins when you need something today, want to handle a machine or grip before you buy, or prefer asking a person behind the counter. Online wins when you want a wider catalog, buy in bulk, or live far from a deep stock counter. Most shops end up using both.
This page stays on finding and checking sellers. The full local-versus-online comparison, including what to check before anything goes on your station, lives on Tattoo Studio Pro’s where to buy tattoo supplies guide. Come back here for Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Dallas, and the state hubs when you are ready to pick a counter.
Using this directory without getting lost
- Home and state pages are for browsing. City pages are for a drive plan.
- Type filters cut noise when a metro mixes supply stores and smoke shops.
- Supplier pages show phone, hours, website, and the last verified month for one business.
- Guides answer buying questions and send you back to city and state pages. This pillar is the overview for “tattoo supply store” searches; the week 1 guide is the deep dive on licenses and pro accounts.
- Corrections go through the listing form linked from About and from each supplier page. Nothing goes live automatically.
If you run a store that is missing, use that same form. We review submissions by hand.

Bottom line
Start with the seller type, then call ahead. Use state hubs and city pages to shortlist, filter when a metro is heavy on smoke shops, and treat “verified” here as a listing check, not a product endorsement or a pro account. Keep shop paperwork ready if you also buy from professional online suppliers. For local-versus-online tradeoffs, use the Tattoo Studio Pro guide linked above. For documents and apprentice rules, use the week 1 license guide.
This guide is for finding and checking sellers. It is not legal advice, and it is not a product ranking.

How we put this guide together
We used this directory's live listing data and About page for store types and what "verified" means here. We re-read Kingpin and Alliance public verification policy pages on 2026-10-26 for the short pro-account section, and pointed readers to our week 1 guide for the full six-supplier comparison. Local-versus-online buying is covered in two short paragraphs with a link to Tattoo Studio Pro's where-to-buy article so we do not repeat that structure. We did not call stores, place test orders, or rank brands. Paul Zadie, a former tattoo artist and studio owner, reviews every guide before it publishes.
